"Although the world is full of suffering... it is also full of the overcoming of it." Helen Keller
I am a humanistic therapist, and trained in the person-centred approach. This means that my focus is on you and your problems or difficulties. I believe that what helps in therapy is you having space to talk and that depends on the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client. It is within that relationship that the client learns about themselves. This is the heart of the person-centred approach & all humanistic therapy models.
I am a person-centred counsellor but I have also studied other therapy approaches and bring elements of those to my work. I have undertaken extensive training in trauma and the impact on the mind and body and incorporate that understanding into any work I undertake.
This type of psychotherapy encourages people to explore their feelings and to talk through their difficulties and any distress they are experiencing. As a person-centred therapist I do not claim to have all the answers and I won’t provide you with advice or solutions. The aim is to develop a relationship of trust where you will feel able to explore and express your feelings and to find a way forward for you.
I will give you my full attention, respect and a commitment to support you in developing your own solutions, insight, and awareness to the issues which are important to you. This doesn't mean that I won't ask questions or have some ideas or suggestions for you, but they'll always be offered with respect and compassion for your situation.
I have worked with people in both short-term and long-term work and am happy to tailor the therapy offered to what is appropriate for you in your circumstances.
I have worked in a local voluntary sector organisation supporting survivors of abuse and sexual violence. I have worked within the NHS in Nottingham counselling individuals suffering from anxiety and depression. Prior to becoming a therapist I worked in careers work, in the NHS, the law and at the BBC. Pretty wide-ranging!
I find it fascinating how trauma impacts the brain and affects our psychological well-being but also by the changes that therapy and mindfulness can bring about. I like to help my clients understand the impact of their early experiences to understand difficulties they have now relate to the past.
I've worked with a wide range of difficulties and problems .... none is too big or too small! If it's causing you some difficulty or concerns then it's worth seeking some help with.
